Current Events

Readers, I have been rent with what to write about the recent events here in the US and the latest tragedy in Iraq, not to mention the AIDS epidemic in Africa and the hundreds of other world tragedies occurring throughout our planet Earth. As I have been in prayer, lifting up people I do not know but feel their very real pain, I have wanted to express my feelings and thoughts on this blog but just couldn't find the words. Thankfully, the following was sent to me tonight and I felt it was meant to be posted here.

"So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with Him."
2 Peter 3:14

During these days of horrific world events, Christians should be appalled but not taken by surprise. Jesus forewarned us of terrible times to come, "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea" (Luke 21:25). In 2 Peter, Chapter 3, Peter reassured believers by reminding them of God's unfolding purposes and final victory.

The apostle described ungodly scoffers, who in the last days will say "Where is this 'coming' He promised? (v.4). We too may wonder why Christ doesn't come back and change things now. Peter affirmed that "The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise," but delays His return to give people everywhere more time to repent (v.9).

We mustn't forget that "With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day" (v.8). Eventually the day of the Lord will come, bringing a judgment of consuming fire. This will be followed by a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness and of God's forgiven people (v.13).

As we anticipate that triumphant day, we must live consistent, holy lives (v.14), resist all evil influences (v.17), and grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (v.18). Then, instead of despairing over evil, we will be able to share the good news of Jesus with the world.
